Quarter-final District Cup today also live on AVE.

--

In addition to the eight catch-up matches today in the various classes, there are also five cup matches on the program today. You could say important matches. The winners of those competitions not only qualify for the semi-finals of the district cup, but can also participate in the major KNVB/cup tournament next season.

South I
Last Thursday, fourth division player UDI’19 managed to qualify for the semi-finals in South II by beating third division team Margriet (2-0). Two days later, fourth divisionists Achilles Veen and GOES also managed to qualify for the semi-finals, but in the South I district.

So there are still five matches on the program today. Second division club Geldrop, which last qualified for the KNVB Cup in the 2006-2007 season and lost 3-1 to Excelsior’31, today receives the number three from the 2nd Division C Zwaluw VFC (Vught). The other match is between fourth divisionist Heerjansdam and the upcoming champion of the 1st Division E RBC.

South II
There are three matches scheduled for today in the South II district. Fourth divisionist UDI’19 already managed to qualify. Classmate EVV Echt will visit the number two of the 2nd Class F RVU from Rothem today. If the latter team, which previously managed to eliminate first division BSV Limburgia and the upcoming champion of the 2nd Division F Bekkerveld, wins, it will qualify for the KNVB Cup for the first time in history.

The same applies to second division club SV Laar. If the current number four of the 2nd Division D, which has lost its last three matches, manages to win against second division team GSV’28, it will also qualify for the major KNVB Cup tournament for the first time. Opponent GSV’28 qualified for that tournament once before (2004-2005) and lost in the first round against Fortuna Sittard (0-3).

The last match is between second division teams DAW from Schaijk and ZSV from Zeilberg. DAW, the current number three of the 2nd Division E, previously eliminated fourth divisionist Wittenhorst after penalties. For DAW, just like Laar and RVU, it would be the first time that they would qualify for the KNVB Cup tournament. Opponent ZSV, on the other hand, a team that won four of its last five competition matches, has already participated twice in the KNVB Cup. The last time was in the 2017-2018 season when it lost 4-3 at Buitenpost in the first round.

However, participating in the tournament in the 2014-2015 season was the most memorable. Better said, not the participation itself, but the road to it. Exactly ten years ago, ZSV, which won its last championship in the same season, took on top class JVC Cuijk in the quarter-finals. The second division ZSV made it extremely difficult for the top division but could not prevent a defeat. The team from Cuijk, which was led by Hans Kraay Jr at the time, managed to triumph 3-4.

Despite the defeat, a nice party took place in Zeilberg. That party ended up being a big party. Zeilberg was initially unaware that it had qualified for the KNVB Cup. EVV Echt, just like JVC Cuijk, was one of the teams that had qualified for the KNVB Cup but were already certain of participating anyway. A phone call to Zeilberg then made for an unforgettable day.
