Israel admits responsibility for the deaths of seven aid workers in the Gaza Strip. The armed forces spoke in a statement about a “tragic incident” that resulted from an Israeli attack.
The death of the partly foreign employees of the aid organization World Central Kitchen led to outraged reactions internationally. The Israeli Defense Forces say it is still investigating what exactly happened.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he regretted the attack. “In the past day, unfortunately, a tragic incident took place where our forces in the Gaza Strip unintentionally hit innocent people,” he said.
By sea
Netanyahu promised a comprehensive investigation and said relevant governments had been contacted. “We will do everything we can to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.”
World Central Kitchen (WCK) is involved in delivering relief supplies by sea in the Gaza Strip. The deceased aid workers come from countries such as Poland, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Reduced
The aid organization stated that the employees’ cars were provided with the WCK logo. Work in the area was suspended following the attack, World Central Kitchen said.
The British Sky News later reported that relief supplies that had been delivered by ship were no longer being unloaded. Some 240 tons of food aid would be returned to Cyprus.
