Zelensky: Don’t lose sight of justice for Ukraine

Countries must continue their efforts to ensure that Russian war criminals are prosecuted, Zelensky said in a video message. The Ukrainian president addresses the guests of a conference at the World Forum in The Hague that focuses on justice in Ukraine. Every future aggressor must know that his actions will not go unpunished, Zelensky argues.

Zelensky was a few days ago in Butcha, the place where a massacre took place shortly after the raid. “Even now we have not identified everyone who was killed by Russian soldiers,” he says. According to him, this shows that there is still much work to be done to bring justice to the Ukrainians.

“Let real peace be restored more quickly,” the Ukrainian president addressed the guests. “And let everyone who has destroyed the peace truly fear to be brought to justice in The Hague.”

According to Zelensky, this is not only in the interest of Ukraine, but of the entire international community. International politics would become more predictable if Russian war criminals were brought to justice, the president says.

For example, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba believes that more arrest warrants should be issued against Russian war criminals by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The court has already requested the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Outgoing Justice Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz warns that people should not become indifferent about the war in Ukraine now that they have recovered from the shock two years after the invasion by Russia. “But for Ukrainians the horrors continue.”

The conference will discuss, among other things, how Ukraine’s research capacity can be increased. In addition, a register has been opened in which Ukrainians can report damage to their homes due to the war.

The next step is to ensure that the damage is actually compensated, says Minister Hanke Bruins Slot (Foreign Affairs). For example, frozen Russian assets could be used for this, she suggests. She admits that it cannot be arranged overnight.

Nevertheless, according to Bruins Slot it is “very important” to start assessing the damage now. “Now these terrible crimes are being committed,” she says.
