A former police officer shot dead his ex and his underage girlfriend in the US state of Washington. Elias Huizar (39) then fled with his one-year-old son. After a 24-hour manhunt, the man was trapped by the police. The killer took his own life with a bullet, but the boy was unharmed.
All alarm bells went off when Amber Rodriguez was shot and killed Monday afternoon at an elementary school in West Richland. The perpetrator fired eight times in front of several bystanders. The victim, who taught there, turned out to be Huizar’s ex. Their nine-year-old son also witnessed the tragedy.
When officers went to investigate Huizar’s home a few blocks away, they also found the body of Angelica Santos. That seventeen year old girl was his current girlfriend. They had a one-year-old son together, but there was no trace of him. An Amber Alert for Roman was immediately issued.
40 kilometer chase
The breakthrough came when an officer tried to pull over Huizar’s car in Oregon yesterday afternoon. The man took off at high speed and also fired several shots during the chase.
However, after forty kilometers on the highway, he ended up in a traffic jam and crashed into another car. His car spun around and could no longer leave the median.
Officers tried to make contact with Huizar, but he realized that he had nowhere to go. Finally he shot himself in the head. “Our goal was to get Roman home safely and we succeeded,” said Officer Kyle Kennedy.
Contact ban
The stops probably went through because Huizar was expected in court last Monday. He was accused of raping two girls, including his underage girlfriend.
The two met when Huizar worked as a cop at her school in Yakima. Santos was eleven years old at the time, and at the age of fifteen he got her pregnant. Now she wanted to get a restraining order out of the way. However, Huizar pleaded not guilty to both charges.
New regulations
A few days earlier, Huizar’s ex had also demanded a new custody arrangement. Rodriguez feared for the safety of their two children. The restraining order that she had previously enforced stated, among other things, that Huizar was not allowed to possess firearms.
The man left the police force in 2021 after receiving a disciplinary sentence. It is not clear what exactly was going on at the time. He then went on to work as a substitute teacher and wrestling coach.
