The 15-year-old boy who caused a fatal accident near Ekehaar last summer has been given 120 hours of community service. The court also sentenced him to a conditional juvenile detention of six months, with a probation period of two years. The Public Prosecution Service had demanded two months’ probation.

In addition, the boy was banned from driving for two years. A 14-year-old girl from Assen died in the accident. Three other passengers aged 14, 15 and 16 were seriously injured.

According to the court, the boy is guilty of reckless driving, the most serious form of guilt in a traffic offense. “The suspect drove at far too high a speed without being in possession of a driver’s license and displayed very dangerous driving behavior,” the court ruled.

The accident happened last year on the night of August 28 to 29. Due to a driver error, the boy ended up on the side of the road and then collided with a tree. The car then skidded and came to rest against a second tree. According to the court, the car collided with the second tree at more than 90 kilometers per hour. The maximum speed on that road near Ekehaar is 60 kilometers per hour.

During the hearing, the underage driver stated that he often drove a car before the accident. “In addition, the file shows that the suspect was warned several times to stop driving his father’s car. The suspect did not heed these warnings, as a result of which the accident occurred with all the disastrous consequences that entails. The court takes this particularly seriously. bad.”

According to the court, the five people involved agreed to secretly meet at night and drive in the car. “However, the accident was solely due to the suspect’s reckless driving.”

The court did not find an unconditional prison sentence appropriate, because the boy is developing well and a stay in prison hinders that development.
