Land is and remains a scarce resource. However, the average price for arable land in the first quarter of 2024 has fallen slightly compared to the last quarter of 2023.

The Land Registry reports this in its quarterly report. The average price for agricultural land will be €78,800 per hectare in the first quarter of 2024. That is 4.4% lower than the average price in the fourth quarter of 2023 when the average price was €82,400. €78,800 per hectare is equal to the average price for the whole of 2023.

The average price of grassland has increased by 2.9% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023 to €73,300 per hectare. The average price of silage maize land fell by 1.4% to €79,200 per hectare. However, the largest decline was in arable land, where the average price fell by 4.7% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. According to the Land Registry, the price of arable land therefore amounts to €88,700 per hectare. The average price of arable land for the whole of 2023 was €90,900 per hectare.

Major regional differences
There are large differences in land prices between the provinces. Flevoland has by far the most expensive agricultural land at €182,700 per hectare. Land in Flevoland is therefore three times as expensive as in neighboring Friesland, the province with the average cheapest agricultural land in the Netherlands.
