According to the AP and Sky News, the victim, 53-year-old Frank Tyson, had crashed his car into a pole and entered a cafe shortly before the arrest on April 18.

Canton police have now released footage from the officers’ body cameras. It shows the officers being led to the bar by a passerby. There, a woman opens the door and says, “Please get him out of here right now.”

George Floyd

When officers try to handcuff him, he resists and repeatedly shouts, “They want to kill me.” The man is handcuffed and placed on his stomach on the ground. There he is restrained with a knee on his back, whereupon he immediately indicates that he cannot breathe.

This words, I can’t breathe, became famous for the death of George Floyd in May 2020. He was also handcuffed on his stomach, kneed in his back and said he could not breathe. The officer responsible at the time was sentenced to prison terms of 22.5 years and 20 years.

Floyd’s arrest was filmed by bystanders:

The officers involved in the arrest in Ohio last week tell Tyson to keep calm. Five minutes later, one of them asks if he has calmed down yet, to which another says: “He could be unconscious.”

After he rolls onto his back, they see that he is not breathing. The officers try to revive him. An ambulance is also called. An hour later, doctors pronounced Tyson dead at a hospital.

24 years in prison

Authorities said Tyson was released earlier this month after serving 24 years in prison for kidnapping and robbery. In the meantime, he allegedly failed to show up for a mandatory appointment with a probation officer.

The officers involved are temporarily on paid leave. Authorities are investigating the incident.
