Chinese President Xi Jinping urged better cooperation during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday. China and the US must resolve “remaining issues” in their mutual relations, he said, according to Chinese state media.

The Chinese leader emphasized that relations between the two countries are developing positively. “Many problems still need to be solved. Additional efforts are still possible,” he told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. “The two countries should be partners, not rivals.”

“I have put forward three important principles: mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,” Xi said of Sino-US relations. “The Earth is big enough for both China and the United States to develop and prosper.”

Antony Blinken is currently on a three-day visit to China. He spoke with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for more than 5.5 hours on Friday. According to the US State Department, several points of contention were discussed during the “substantial and constructive” conversation. Among other things, Beijing’s support for the military industry in Russia, the situation in the South China Sea and the Taiwan issue were discussed.

According to Beijing, Wang Yi emphasized the trade disputes in that conversation. He accused the US of “taking endless measures to suppress the Chinese economy”.

Diplomatic relations between the US and China appear to be thawing. In February last year, almost all contacts were severed after the American armed forces shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon. However, in November, a meeting took place in California between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. That meeting was followed by talks between members of both governments at the highest level.
