It is becoming increasingly busy along the route that the royal family will walk in Emmen. Hundreds of people are already waiting behind the crowd barriers in the Hoofdstraat.
From Emmen station a long procession of people walks towards the center. Many have dressed up in orange clothing or carry Dutch flags.
The birthday king and his family are expected at Noorderplein around 11 a.m. The family walks via the Hoofdstraat to the Market Square, the Rensen Park, the town hall, the skate park and past the Wildlands animal park. The day ends at the main stage on Raadhuisplein.

In the past (then) Queen’s Day was on April 30. That was Queen Juliana’s birthday. When her daughter Beatrix ascended the throne, she decided to keep Queen’s Day on April 30, in honor of her mother. In addition, there was a high chance of bad weather if Beatrix held the holiday on her own birthday (January 31).
