    About 100 demonstrators

About 100 demonstrators gather at the Amstelveenseweg, on the edge of the A10, around 12 noon. They fully intend to block the highway, despite Mayor Halsema’s express ban.

“The climate cannot wait,” says spokesperson Josefien van Marlen. “ING’s fossil policy is worsening the climate crisis and that must simply stop.”

And that has to be on King’s Day? Van Marlen: “We also celebrate King’s Day. The king said in his Christmas speech 20-21 that more attention should be paid to the climate. We are here in the name of the king.”

At 5 to 12 they climb up the slope of the A10 and stand along the railing of the A10. Cars honk. For now, the police are watching.

    Welcome!

Welcome to our live blog. Climate movement Extinction Rebellion (XR) will try to occupy the A10 today from 12 noon, out of dissatisfaction with the ING bank’s policy on fossil energy.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema officially banned the demonstration last Thursday. She did this after previously urging Extinction Rebellion to abandon the blockade. Follow all developments here.
