In the year that she lived in Spain, Princess Amalia ‘can find more freedom‘ than was possible in the Netherlands. The princess spoke for the first time about her time in Spain on King’s Day. King Willem-Alexander expresses his gratitude to the residents of Emmen. “You have shown that you can work well together. That lists and polls (where Emmen invariably comes out badly, ed.) they are just not right,” he says. “You sometimes say when something is very fantastic, it could have been done less. Well, it could have been done much less.”

Then the family and the crowded square sing the national anthem. That ends the visit.

Princess Alexia is taking a gap year after graduating in Wales last summer. “I have been very happy to be able to travel a lot and get to know other cultures. Especially to be able to focus on something other than school,” says Alexia. “A bit of work, a bit of travel. In such a gap year, every moment is special.”

She doesn’t know yet what she will do next. King Willem-Alexander is also ‘with anticipation’ awaiting his daughter’s choice of study. “We only know it when she knows it, so I leave it completely to our daughter,” said Willem-Alexander. “She has such lot of intereststhat I really wait with anticipation to see what she ultimately chooses.”

Princess Ariane, who has been going to school in Italy since September, calls it ‘a very wonderful experience’ that she can live and learn there. “I’m glad to be back now, because I do miss my parents. I miss them every day, it’s a distance,” says Ariane.

Her Italian is still ‘così così‘, she said laughing, which means something like so-so, ‘but I’m working on it’. One of her sisters chimed in by saying that things are “getting better every day.” And the princess agreed.

Crown Princess Amalia lives in the Netherlands again. “Due to certain circumstances I have… have to live in Madrid, but I must honestly say: it was a wonderful time, which in turn made life here somewhat possible. I’m extremely grateful and I’m happy to be back. I was able to find my freedom a little more there than was possible here,” says Amalia, who could no longer live in the Netherlands due to serious threats.

“She is very independent and smart. It was a loss that she was not there, but you also have to give a child freedom and wings. Every time she left was It with a tearbut also with a smile,” Máxima responds.

“To be able to celebrate your birthday with your own family, that is of course the most beautiful thing you can experience,” said the king. “I’m glad everyone is back. To be together and celebrate in Emmen. And then of course with the five of us, and with friends and family. I’m grateful to everyone here in full health is present again today.”

Last year, Princess Alexia was missing from the festivities in Rotterdam. She then missed her father’s birthday due to the exam period of her studies in Wales.

The anti-monarchist movement Republic demonstrates along the route of the royal family in Emmen. A group of about thirty people stand in a separate demonstration area and hold up a large scoreboard. It shows the number of signatures collected for a petition calling for a significant salary cut for the king.

When the royal family passed by, there were boos and the demonstrators shouted, among other things, ‘Stop the monarchy‘. They also held up signs with texts such as ‘Willem the last’, ‘Never blue envelopes’, and ‘Willem-Alexander, do you really want to do this to your daughter?’.

The king waved in the direction of the demonstrators, but did not stop. The rest of the family also moved on.

Birthday boy Laura stood along the route and hoped for a kiss from the king. She wrote that on a large banner, and that attracted the attention of fellow birthday boy Willem-Alexander. “I asked him first to give me a kiss on the cheek, but he thought that was too bad… too much. So I say: at least on my hand. Then he looked for a moment like: should I do it? Then I really got that kiss on my hand. He did it, so my day can’t be ruined anymore.”

The royal family’s knowledge of the Drenthe region is tested. King Willem-Alexander is one of the team captains, as are Queen Máxima, Crown Princess Amalia and Princess Laurentien. It is hoped that he wins, because at the Jeugdjournaal his wife, Queen Máxima, revealed the week that the king doesn’t like losing.

Princess Amalia has ‘extremely good‘ read up on the province in order to be well prepared for the game, she joked. Máxima seems to be cheating for a moment by looking something up on her phone, but she says that she used the calculator on her mobile phone. Yes Yes… Ultimately, the queen wins together with Prince Bernhard, Princess Annette and Princess Aimée won the quiz about Drenthe on King’s Day.

The four teams were asked questions about Drenthe, ranging from football and the circuit in Assen to cycling routes and agriculture.

Protesters from Extinction Rebellion (XR) arrived just after 12 noon on Saturday A10 near the former ING office in Amsterdam. The police tried to stop the blockade to no avail. There are about a hundred demonstrators, some of them decked out in orange.

The action group demands that ING immediately stop financing the fossil industry. The Amsterdam triangle (mayor, police and justice) called the blockade on King’s Day irresponsible in advance and has banned the action. Read more here.

Princess Amalia was injured during her trip along the King’s Day route accidentally buried under a mountain of orange ribbons. The decoration fluttered through the air, but ended up in a clump on top of the 20-year-old princess.

Amalia’s sister Alexia immediately rushed to help her. The personal assistant of the princesses and the king’s grand mistress also immediately came to Amalia’s aid.

The princess could laugh himself about the incident. She then continued the tour past the audience and the Emmen folk singer Jannes.
