Tornadoes left a trail of destruction in the US states of Oklahoma and Iowa last weekend. At least five people, including a four-month-old baby, were killed.

According to local authorities, 78 tornadoes were recorded on Friday, mainly in the states of Iowa and Nebraska. Another 35 were counted Saturday from north Texas to Missouri.

Four out of five fatalities occurred in Oklahoma. At least a hundred people were injured by flying debris. Photos show unprecedented havoc and destruction. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has declared a 30-day state of emergency.

Wounded

The village of Sulfur, with about 5,000 inhabitants, was hit hardest. Dozens of homes were destroyed. “You can hardly imagine the damage,” Stitt said. “Pretty much every business in the center has been destroyed.” About thirty people were injured in the village.

More than 50,000 homes in Texas and more than 30,000 in Oklahoma are without power. Tornadoes are quite common in the US, mainly in the center and south of the country. According to meteorologists, it is very exceptional that large tornadoes follow each other so quickly.
