Many cats have a preference for boxes. They play with it or crawl into it. Usually this is harmless, but not always. The American cat Galena also experienced this. The animal was accidentally sent from Utah to California in a return package. She was only found after a week.

Indoor cat Galena suddenly went missing earlier this month, much to the concern of her owner Carrie Clack. She and her family searched and searched, posted missing person posters in the neighborhood and made calls on social media. “Galena has been a tremendous emotional support to me and has helped me through many health issues over the past six years,” Clark told American news channel KSL TV in an email. ‘The fear and stress of not knowing what happened to her was unbearable.’

After a week, Clark received a phone call. The missing cat had been found in Los Angeles, hundreds of miles away. Galena was found in an Amazon box, next to five pairs of work boots. By scanning the cat’s subcutaneous chip, a veterinarian discovered that it was Clark’s pet.

“I didn’t believe it at first and thought it was a joke,” Clark wrote. “I ran to tell my husband that Galena had been found. We broke down when we realized she must have jumped into a large box that we had sent back. There were several pairs of work boots in there to try out.’

Ultimately, Galena was stuck in a box without food or water for six days. She breathed through an unsealed crack in the box. An Amazon employee named Brandy rescued the cat from the box when she found her in the California warehouse. She nursed the cat before taking Galena to the vet the next day. Despite everything, the cat appeared to be in good health.

Clark and her husband booked a flight to Los Angeles to pick up the animal. ‘It was a great reunion! Galena immediately stopped shaking and relaxed in my arms when I was allowed to hold her again,” Clark said. ‘Although she was thinner and had mild dehydration, her blood values were normal and she was completely unharmed!’ The family returned home to Utah after the reunion.

“Galena loves boxes, it’s just part of her personality,” says Clark, who urges pet owners to chip cats and “triple check your delivery boxes.”
