Police announced at a news conference that a US Marshals team, a federal law enforcement agency that tracks down fugitives, had gone to the Charlotte home to serve a warrant on the suspect for illegal firearms possession. Fire was then opened on the officers from the home. Three federal agents were killed.

Many police, including a SWAT arrest team, then arrived on the scene. Another four officers from the local police force were injured. One of them was in critical condition and later died in hospital from his injuries, police said.

The suspected shooter has also been eliminated. He was shot dead by police in his front yard. Two people who were also present in the home have been arrested and are being questioned by police, CNN writes. It concerns a 17-year-old teenager and a woman. At least one of them also allegedly shot at the officers.

“Today is a very tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the law enforcement profession,” Johnny Jennings, chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, said at a news conference. “We have lost a number of heroes who were trained to keep our community safe. But if we put on this uniform, we have no guarantee that we will return home.”
