Facing RB Leipzig in the last 16, Real Madrid eked out a one-goal win in Germany in the first leg, but the match very easily could have gone the other way.

The hosts started the contest on top and thought they had taken the lead in the third minute, only to have Benjamin Sesko’s goal disallowed by VAR. They had numerous other chances to take the lead but it was instead Madrid’s Brahim Diaz who would break the deadlock just after half-time, scoring a magnificent solo effort.

Andriy Lunin made several big saves as the Spanish side took their slender advantage home for the return leg.

Just like the first leg, Real Madrid were fortunate to avoid a loss in the second, edging out a 2-1 aggregate win to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

RB Leipzig created several clear-cut chances to score but Lunin once again came up with big save after big save. The La Liga side doubled their aggregate lead in the 65th minute when Vinicius Junior scored on a counter-attack, but the Germans responded just three minutes later through Willi Orban to pull back within a goal.

The Bundesliga side almost forced extra time when Dani Olmo hit the woodwork in second-half stoppage time, but Madrid managed to see out the win.
