Giro 2024: Live blog stage 1 to Turin – UAE Emirates keeps six escapees short

The long wait is over! The first big tour of the year starts on Saturday with the Giro d’Italia 2024. The opening stage around Turin offers early opportunities for puncheur and climbing types. Or is there actually only one contender named Tadej Pogacar?

Although the first stage is relatively short at 140 kilometers, the organization of the Italian race rates the stage as a 3-star stage. The riders will encounter three categorized climbs along the way, meaning they will have to overcome a total of 1,850 meters of altitude. The absolute final – later added by the organization – is the climb of the San Vito (1.4 km at 9.4%).
