On Saturday, May 4, we held a two-minute silence in the Netherlands for the victims of the Second World War or during later wars, or those who died during peace missions. Also in Capelle aan den IJssel we reflected on the victims.

As every year, a commemoration meeting is held in the Nieuwe Westerkerk. Here Mayor Cor Lamers gave the May 4 speech. Lamers also reflected on contemporary wars, crises and conflicts: “That should wake us up to stand up for freedom even more. And to continue to guard against intolerance.”

Lamers also appealed to people to continue to think for themselves and “not to blindly follow ‘groups or people’”. He hopes that the sacrifices of the past “will be an impetus for our future with peace and freedom for all.” The mayor’s entire speech can be read on the municipality’s website.

After the memorial meeting in the Nieuwe Westerkerk, those present walked a silent procession to the old cemetery of Capelle-West. Various poems were recited by Capelse students and wreaths were placed at the war memorial at the cemetery.
