Libya is taking part in the ‘African Lion 2024’ military exercises to be held in Morocco later this month.

An official Libyan military source told the Hespress news service. The participation comes after an invitation from the United States, which recently sent a delegation from the American Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM) to Libya.

According to the source, Libya wants to demonstrate its presence and capacity to contribute to security in the region, which is facing major challenges such as wars, divisions and the presence of Russian mercenaries in several African countries.

Libya itself also faces political and security challenges and, through its military branches, wants to participate in international efforts to tackle the threats from extremist groups and organized crime.

The US military has announced that around 700 National Guard soldiers will participate in the ‘African Lion 2024’ exercises, which are believed to be the largest of their kind in North Africa. A US military official said the exercises will improve cooperation and efficiency of the armed forces of participating countries.

The exercises will include training on the use of the Javelin anti-tank missile system, which the US recently sold to Morocco for $260 million. The exercises will take place in several Moroccan cities and regions, such as Agadir, Tan Tan, Mahbas, Kenitra and Tifnit, from May 20 to 31.
