Former US President Donald Trump continues to clash with the judge in the lawsuit surrounding hush money for porn star Stormy Daniels. This prohibits the Republican from influencing the trial through public statements. Trump has already flouted that ban ten times. A prison sentence is getting closer.

Judge Juan Merchan has already imposed a total of $ 10,000, equivalent to about 9,300 euros, in fines on Trump. The politician continues to violate the gag order. He does this by posting on social media about the jurors, witnesses and family members of the judge and prosecutors. Merchan is fed up with the situation. He calls the violations “continuous and deliberate”. According to the judge, they are “a direct attack on the rule of law”. He would prefer not to impose further sanctions on Trump. “I do not want to impose a prison sentence and have done everything to avoid that. But I will, if necessary.”

The judge imposed another fine of $1,000. A prison sentence would be “a very last step”, for several reasons, Merchan explains. This would sidetrack the lawsuit and have political consequences, because Trump is a presidential candidate in the middle of a campaign. Moreover, as a former president, Trump receives lifelong protection from the Secret Service. Organizing security in a prison would represent an immense challenge.

The trial begins its twelfth day today. Earlier, a Trump employee spoke as a witness. A former top executive of a tabloid also told how stories about Trump’s sex life were covered up.

New York state prosecutors say Trump falsified business accounting records. He did this to cover up a payment of $130,000 (about 120,000 euros) to porn star Stormy Daniels. According to her, she had sex with Trump in 2006.
