A body was found in the water of the Oude Dender in the center of Dendermonde around noon on Sunday. It turned out that Luc Van Hoorick (50) from Zele, who had been missing since Friday night. The police distributed a search message for Luc Van Hoorick (50) from Zele on Saturday. The man was missing and was last seen on the Grote Markt in Dendermonde, around 0:30 am on Friday night.
It was a disturbing disappearance and the emergency services started a search. So it ended around noon on Sunday. Then the lifeless body was found in the Oude Dender. The fire brigade had used a sonar boat and divers to search for the missing person.
How the man ended up in the water is still a mystery. In his environment, people assume a tragic accident. In his spare time, Luc was a goalkeeper trainer at football club Heikant Zele. “His death has touched us deeply,” says Dirk De Mey of Heikant Zele. “Luc is a real Heikantenaar. He played in the youth at our club and then moved to SK Beveren, because he had talent. He later returned as goalkeeper coach. He had been doing that for several years now. The disappointment of everyone in our family club is great. We had a foot lunch on Sunday and we held a minute of silence for him there, we also did that just before the kick-off of the home game of our first team.”
No closure
This year, several people had already accidentally ended up in the water of the Oude Dender. In January, a man near the Bogaerdbrug was rescued by a regular of café ‘t Peirt, and in August a woman was removed from the water by an intervention team of the local police. There is no closure on the edges of the watercourse in the city center.
