Viewers are disappointed that this candidate has to leave ‘Project Rembrandt’: ‘We enjoyed you’

--

While drawing he says: “It is a competition, a race against time. That’s actually not really my thing. That’s not what life is about for me. I’m not ambitious at all. It’s the best thing there is if we figure it out together.” Jan ends with his drawing at number five. Jury member Marc de Beyer thinks the large milk cartons are well thought out, but according to him they do not contribute to an interesting composition.

Composition

On day two, Jan put on his nicest suit: “If I go out today, at least I’m going in style.” For the free assignment, each candidate receives three models that must be put into a powerful composition according to their own wishes. The composition must tell the story behind the sentence: ‘Trijntje tells Kees what happened. And together they come up with a trick so that Klaas doesn’t find out.’

Within three hours, the candidates paint their composition with oil paint. Jan talks about his composition: “It is a very complex intrigue. I really enjoy doing it.” After an hour and a half of painting, sweat is dripping down his forehead. He says: “I’m way behind schedule. So far I don’t really like it at all.”

‘It’s about the game’

Actor Roeland Fernhout assists the jury in choosing who should leave Project Rembrandt. He finds the emotion in Jan’s painting credible. Jury member De Beyer is less complimentary about Jan’s artwork: “The drama is missing, which makes it feel like a flat representation.”

Jan explains the comment by a lack of time: “I’ve been busy like crazy.” Unfortunately, De Beyer has to disappoint Jan: he has to leave the match. Steenhuizen says to Jan: “We are going to miss you enormously.” Jan concludes the painting adventure with the beautiful words: “It’s about the game, not about the marbles.”
