In 2023, De Ster was able to raise an amount of more than 201 million euros for the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science through the sale of advertising space on the channels of the national public broadcaster. The ministry receives a substantial annual contribution from Ster income. The amount is 26.1 million euros more than the ministry had budgeted. Despite this result, there are concerns: change is necessary to maintain this contribution in the future.

Ster contributes an average of 200 million euros per year to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Frank Volmer, CEO of Ster: ‘We are proud that we have once again been able to make a significant contribution to public broadcasting in 2023, but we are also concerned. We see that linear viewing and listening time is decreasing and, due to Slob’s measures, we cannot compensate for this with the growth of online media use. If this does not change, last year is expected to be the last year that Ster can pay an amount above 200 million euros and turnover will eventually drop to 150 million euros. While we can pay 250 million in the long term if Slob’s measures are reversed and we fully utilize the possibilities within legislation and regulations.. An important sum of money at a time of economic challenges.’
