A 50-year-old pedestrian, who was hit by a car in the rice district of Suriname last weekend, died in hospital today from his injuries. The cause of the collision is still unknown after three days.

The victim Dewpersad Moenielal, also known as ‘King’, was found seriously injured along the Ramdath Tewarieweg in the Nickerie district on Sunday morning around 6:30 am.

Investigations by the Surinamese police revealed that he walked along the above-mentioned road, coming from the direction of the Parmessarweg and going in the direction of the Pisang Kapokweg.

Moenielal was probably hit by a car near the electric mast no. 19218. The driver of the vehicle in question drove away, leaving the victim in a helpless condition on the road.

That morning, the police from the Paradise station received a report that a male was lying on the road with injuries and visited the location to investigate. The victim was probably under the influence of alcohol or some other intoxicant and was difficult to approach.

He was taken by ambulance to the Mungra Medical Center (MMC), where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital in critical condition. Dewpersad Moenielal died of his injuries in hospital today.

The police are calling on the driver of this collision to report to the police at the Paradise police station. Furthermore, the police also asks society to pass on all information that could lead to finding out the whereabouts of this motorist to the police at the aforementioned office on 0236122, the free tip line on 179 or the Command Center on the number 115.

The investigation of this collision has been transferred to the West Region Traffic Unit.
