Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf confirmed on Tuesday that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and himself have been in contact with the leaders of the other Maghreb countries for almost a year. Attaf emphasized that North Africa is the only region in the world without an umbrella body for cooperation. This has led to a lack of a common position on international issues.

The minister emphasized that the initiative is not aimed at creating an alternative to the UMA, but at reactivating the existing union. He acknowledged that the UMA is currently “in a coma”, but stated that the institutions still exist and the conventions are still valid.
