Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has imposed a ban on red carpets at most official Pakistani government events. In doing so, he is trying to further limit government spending.

The red carpet isn’t completely banned. If there are diplomatic events where protocol requires the laying down of a bishop, that protocol will be followed.

Pakistan’s economy has been in dire straits for some time now. The Pakistani government has therefore already taken drastic measures to cut costs. Prime Minister Sharif and his cabinet decided a year ago to waive their salaries, allowances and bonuses.

Sharif asked his ministers and advisers to limit foreign travel, book cheaper airline tickets and avoid staying in five-star hotels. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari also chose not to receive a salary last year.

Pakistan has already received billions in aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in recent years. Last year, the South Asian country received 2.8 billion euros from the UN organization. Now the Pakistani government wants to apply for a new loan from the IMF of at least 5.5 billion euros.
