The Atlantic Navigator II in the port of Rostock

NOS Newstoday, 02:13

A cargo ship carrying goods from Russia has been stuck in the port of Rostock since March 4. German authorities have banned the crew from continuing sailing because the cargo is on the EU sanctions list. It is not clear what will happen to the ship and its crew.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the ship has 251 containers with birch plywood on board. Russian wood is on the European sanctions list. The local newspaper Ostzee-Zeitung writes based on sources that the ship also transports enriched uranium. This substance is important for running nuclear power stations. Enriched uranium may be imported despite the sanctions against Russia.

The Atlantic Navigator II was on its way from the Russian port of Saint Petersburg to the United States. The ship suffered damage in the Baltic Sea, after which it was diverted to Rostock for repairs. The ship has long since been repaired, but a continuation of the journey is not possible for the time being.

The ship belongs to a Canadian shipping company. In addition to North America, it has branches in Russia and Ukraine. The company has protested against the decision of German customs, but so far this has been in vain.

In addition to wood, the European sanctions list against Russia also includes goods such as oil, coal, steel, gold, diamonds, cigarettes and products such as caviar and vodka.
