A fourteen-year-old boy was killed in a stabbing incident in northeast London on Tuesday. Four others were injured and taken to hospital, British police said. Police have arrested a 36-year-old man with a sword.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the deceased victim was thirteen years old, because the British police reported this at the time. The police have now announced that he was fourteen.

The incident happened just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The suspect allegedly drove a car into a house in the suburb of Hainault and then attacked people. A fourteen-year-old boy died from his injuries in hospital.

The other victims are two civilians and two police officers who responded to a report about the incident. The officers have “significant injuries” and require surgery. No one is in danger, police say.

Officers were able to arrest the suspect by tasering him. The arrest took place 22 minutes after the first report to police, a police official said at a news conference. He declined to answer the question of whether the man had been arrested before.

Motive not yet known, police are not thinking of terrorism

The suspect’s motive is not yet known. The police are not thinking about terrorism and are not looking for other suspects. The exact location of the attack is also still unclear. A nearby metro station and several roads have been closed for investigation.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan says he is “devastated” by the events. He announced extra patrols to reassure people, writes the BBC.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calls the violence “shocking”. “My thoughts are with those involved and their families,” he writes on X. “Such violence has no place on our streets.”

British Home Secretary James Cleverly has expressed his condolences to those involved. Both Cleverly and Khan are calling on people not to distribute images of the incident on social media, as this will cause speculative stories to circulate.
