Germany does not have to stop supplying weapons to Israel. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on Tuesday rejected Nicaragua’s accusations in a genocide case brought by the country.

Nicaragua accused Germany of complicity in alleged genocide in Gaza. The country found it unacceptable that Germany “provides food aid to Palestinians in Gaza, who are simultaneously slaughtered with weapons that Germany supplies to Israel.” Because of the case at the ICJ, Nicaragua decided to close its embassy in Berlin.

The Central American country asked the ICJ to impose emergency measures on Germany to prevent it from supplying weapons and other aid. But the United Nations court refuses. “The court finds that such measures are not necessary at this time.”

The ICJ does say that it remains deeply concerned about the situation in Gaza. The court has not yet closed the case. Only the emergency measures that Nicaragua requested are not being implemented.

The German Foreign Ministry is satisfied with the ruling. It says on X that no one is above the law and that Germany is not a party to the conflict in Gaza.

The ministry emphasizes that Germany is the largest donor of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. At the same time, it indicates that the “terror of October 7” has set in motion the new downward spiral and that Israel has the right to defend itself. The ministry also says that Hamas uses civilians as living shields.
