The Kremlin has responded to the charged statement by British Foreign Minister David Cameron. He said on Thursday that the United Kingdom has no objections if Ukraine uses the British weapons supplied to attack targets in Russia. This greatly angered the Russians.

The Kremlin calls Cameron’s statement a “direct escalation” of the ongoing conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the comments were “dangerous and worrying” and put European security at risk. David Cameron on Thursday promised Ukraine three billion pounds (3.5 billion euros) in annual military aid for “as long as it is needed.”

The British minister – who was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 2010 to 2016 – added that his government in London has no objection to the weapons also being used in Russia. “Some of the equipment is arriving in Ukraine today while I am here,” Cameron said in an interview with the Reuters news agency during a visit to Kyiv. Cameron also said that the aid package is Britain’s largest to date. In the Ukrainian capital he met with President Zelensky, among other things.

‘Ukraine has that right’

According to Cameron, Ukraine may use the weapons supplied by London to attack targets in Russia. “Ukraine has that right. Just as Russia strikes within Ukraine, you can well understand why Ukraine feels the need to ensure it defends itself,” Cameron said. The equipment supplied includes precision-guided bombs, air defense missiles and equipment for a hundred mobile air defense teams, so that Ukraine can shoot down Russian drones and missiles.

‘Challenge of our generation’

In addition, Cameron indicated that his country will invest tens of millions more in the near future, including in Ukrainian energy infrastructure and future innovations to support Ukraine’s energy transition and recovery. Cameron: “Ukraine is fiercely defending itself against Russia’s illegal invasion, meaning a war that Putin thought would last days will last years.” But this war is the challenge of our generation and Ukraine cannot fight it alone.” When asked, he ruled out that the United Kingdom will send troops to Ukraine.
