Marilyn Birch cannot believe her luck. The 76-year-old Welsh woman lost the engagement ring her husband gave her 54 years ago. Thanks to a helpful detective, the ring has now been found. “Very emotional.”
In 1970, the then 22-year-old Birch was working in the countryside in Pontardawe, a small village just north of Swansea. After feeding the cattle on her farm, she noticed that her engagement ring was no longer on her finger. Despite an intensive search, she could not find the jewelry anywhere.
In the 54 years that followed, Birch regularly looked at the ground around the farm. “I was hoping to come across the ring somewhere,” Birch told Sky News. “But eventually we gave up and resigned ourselves to never seeing that engagement ring again.”
Help from an unexpected source
However, Birch had not counted on the help of hobby sleuth Keith Phillips. With his metal detector, with the permission of Mrs. Birch and her husband, he spent hours searching the farm for old treasures.
“He showed us different coins and bits and pieces that he found in different places on the farm,” Birch said. “One night I said to him as a joke, ‘Listen, Keith, stop looking for nonsense and go find me my engagement ring.’”
20 centimeters deep
They both laughed about it at the time, but about a week later Phillips called Mrs. Birch. He had found her engagement ring. “The ring was buried 20 centimeters deep in one of the fields,” she says. “I was speechless. It was quite emotional. Also for Keith. He was very happy to have found the ring.”
Mrs Birch removed the dirt from the ring with a toothbrush and says the ring has not come off her finger since.
