The Frisians who traveled to Malmö to support Joost are not allowed to do so with the Frisian flag. That is taboo at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The organization only tolerates flags of countries that are members of the United Nations in the hall, and has a preference for those of nations participating in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Exceptions are the rainbow flag and that of the European Union, provided they are not used to make a political statement.

That’s in it flag protocol of the Eurovision Song Contest. Regional and provincial flags are explicitly excluded, as are flags with commercial or political messages, with offensive content or with statements in a language other than English. It is not entirely clear how this fits with the foregoing.

Posing with Frisian flag

Flags brought with you may not be larger than 120 by 80 centimeters, or 60 by 40 centimeters if a stick is used. It may not be longer than 50 centimeters, excluding flag.

Who plans to to incorporate the pompeblêden of the Frisian flag into his outfit will probably be left untouched.

Joost himself willingly posed with the Frisian flag, held in his hands by Telegraph reporter Richard van de Crommert.
