The trial against former American President Donald Trump in the affair surrounding the withholding of secret documents has been postponed indefinitely, American media report. This eliminates the May 20 start date, judge Aileen Cannon said.
Cannon, who was appointed by Trump in 2020, has not set a new date or provided an explanation for the decision. However, the judge has scheduled hearings in preparation for the trial, which will last until July 22. According to observers, the chance that the lawsuit will be filed before the presidential elections has now become very small.
Trump is accused of illegally withholding classified documents at his Florida resort after leaving the White House in 2021. According to the indictment, he also tried to hide boxes of classified documents after receiving a subpoena to return them. Trump has declared himself innocent in the case.
Jack Smith has been appointed special prosecutor for this case. He is also the same in the national case surrounding election fraud and the Capitol storming.
