A treasure of 25 special silver coins. You can read in the book why it was hidden in Zutphen around 1580 The Treasure of the Crescent Knifewhich was published last week.

In 1932, while digging in the cellar of baker Kelderman, workmen came across a piece of textile with 25 silver coins. In the Zutphensche Courant The special treasure discovery was reported on February 11, 1932.

The workmen each received one and about twenty coins remained in the family. The Kelderman family donated eleven of these coins to the municipality of Zutphen in 2023. The archeology team immediately got to work on it.

The coins form the center of a story about the uncertain times around 1580, in the middle of the Eighty Years’ War. In 1580, Zutphen had come to the side of the Dutch Revolt for the second time and the Spaniards threatened to take the city by force again.

Who hid the treasure, when and why? And why has the treasure not been excavated by its owner? The archaeologists now answer these questions in the book The Treasure of the Crescent Knife, which was released this week. The book is for sale at various bookstores in Zutphen.
