FIJNAART – On Wednesday afternoon, the first copy of the Diary of a District Sister was presented to councilor Pauline Joosten. As a district sister, Els Meeuwisse kept a diary for years, which has now been published as a book. The book not only provides an insight into the life of a dedicated healthcare professional, but also illustrates the developments of the community nursing profession from 1979 to 2019.

Heartwarming and sometimes challenging experiences

The special book, prepared in collaboration with Rosanne van Poppel, former communications advisor at Surplus, shows from a personal story how community nursing has developed in a period of changing legislation and regulations, the rise of market forces in healthcare and the growing need for support and care at home. How the crucial role of the community nurse disappeared in these changes, but fortunately it can no longer be ignored. From her perspective, Els Meeuwisse shares her heartwarming and sometimes challenging experiences, emphasizing that care is essentially about people’s well-being, not so much about market principles. “I hope that with my caring heart I can inspire others and that the book contributes to a better understanding of the value of community nursing.”

The ‘Diary of a District Sister’ is mainly aimed at professionals in the healthcare and welfare sector. With the book, Surplus not only wants to emphasize the important work of community nurses, but also wants to stimulate dialogue from a different perspective about the future of healthcare, the growing demand for care and the possibilities of living at home longer, while at the same time the book serves as a source of inspiration. for reflection on the value and essence of care and welfare.
