VEENENDAAL It was busy at the presentation of the book about the Nieuwewegseschool and surrounding area last Thursday afternoon. The presentation took place in café ‘t Huchie on this almost oldest street in Veenendaal.

by Martin Brink

Many also took the opportunity to meet each other and briefly talk to writer Anne Slok, after which they of course purchased the book. Anne grew up on Oranjestraat in the family of Rijk and Jannie Slok and has visited many former residents in recent years.

During the presentation, these three media persons also saw each other: Hein Veld (de Vallei newspaper), Gert Veenhof (Head of Information Veenendaal) and Martin Brink (De Rijnpost). They recalled many tasty memories from a time when anything was still possible. Photo: Martin Brink

ANTONIE SPIES

This resulted in short chapters, provided with a lot of illustration material. We meet, among others, hairdresser Rijk van Manen, butcher Groenhof, transport company Leewis, Cees van Leeuwen and Anthonie Spies from Elst, who had a fateful encounter in this area during the war.
And of course everything about the Nieuwewegseschool with head teachers such as Master Heida, Master Van de Nadort and Master Visser.

VOLKSWAGEN PICKUP

Jan Hoedeman, nationally known journalist who grew up in this area, saw a (coloured) photo from 1976 of the Vendselseweg with his father’s red Volkswagen Pickup during the presentation.
A characteristic means of transport with an open loading platform that was used to transport large quantities of drinks to customers.

“I didn’t know that photo,” he said excitedly. He would have it sent to him. Surprisingly, the registration (in 1903) of a certain Jacob Pilon was also visible, who was a teacher for a very short time at the Vrije Christian School aan het Verlaat, where the later Nieuwewegseschool started in 1863. That must have almost been related to the current city guide Jaap Pilon.

Anne Slok, historical employee of this newspaper, has delved into the subject over the past two years and writes the stories in a light-hearted manner, which largely take place in the 1960s and 1970s. These are the years in which he grew into adulthood, the time when he attended school and played with friends on the field where Huize De Zoom once stood.

The bound book was self-published, has a circulation of six hundred copies and costs fifteen euros. For sale at the Van Kooten bookstore on Zandstraat.
