Hardenberg

29-year-old Rutger Brunink from Hardenberg published a management book at the end of April. The title of his book is: “From silo problem to collaboration. 16 solutions for poor collaboration between departments.” The book can be purchased via heijink.mijnbestseller.nl/rutgerbrunink and bol.com.

The idea for the bo emerged in 2020. Rutger wrote his book in his spare time over the past 3.5 years. The idea for his book in 202 arose after Rutger read a book by the English anthropologist Gillian Tett. In her book she explains why many organizations still have to deal with islands or silos, as she calls them. These islands hinder effective communication and collaboration between employees.

After reading more books and articles on this theme, Rutger discovered that a book on solutions to the island problem or silo problem was missing. Rutger responds to this with his book.

Causes, consequences and solutions

In his book, Rutger first provides a definition of the silo problem, after which he describes the causes and consequences. The core of his book consists of 16 solutions to the silo problem. Rutger explains how organizations can apply these solutions to promote collaboration between employees from different departments. According to him, this is important because cooperation is necessary to solve complex problems. Nowadays, problems have increasingly more dimensions, such as ecological, financial, legal and social dimensions. Employees face the challenge of using as many dimensions as possible when solving problems. This requires employees to look beyond their own department and collaborate with colleagues from other departments.

Collaboration is not self-evident

Collaboration between employees from different departments seems more obvious than it is. In many organizations there is a lack of communication, coordination and cooperation between employees from different departments. Employees do not have an eye for organizational goals and do not know what concerns colleagues from other departments. In the worst case, colleagues work against or compete with each other. This problem is called the silo problem. Rutger is proud of his book and hopes that many people will read his book. His book can be purchased via heijink.mijnbestseller.nl/rutgerbrunink and bol.com and costs 21.95 euros.
