During the time that NS was the owner of Abellio, the financial impact of Abellio UK (positive) and Abellio Germany (negative) over a period of 20 years was on balance approximately € 260 million negative. Both the financial accounting and the operational activities of Abellio abroad and NS on the Dutch main rail network (HRN) are separated. The departure of NS from Germany therefore has no impact on Dutch travelers.

Angelique Magielse, financial director at NS: “When NS took its first steps across the border about 20 years ago, the starting point was that we wanted to prepare for the changing European rail market. In recent years, that necessity has disappeared and we have expanded our activities have been reconsidered. Due to various developments, including corona, we also had to conclude that our remaining foreign activities did not contribute enough. That is why we have decided to sell Abellio Germany with this decision.”

3 rail concessions

Abellio Germany currently operates 3 rail concessions in 8 federal states. Abellio also owns cleaning and security company PTS in Germany. In 2023, Abellio had a turnover of more than 400 million euros and more than 1,600 employees. The head office of Abellio Germany is located in Berlin.

NS’s shareholder, the Ministry of Finance, has approved the sale of Abellio Germany. Regional concessionaires and governments must still formally approve the transfer. The transfer is then expected to be finalized in the second half of the year.
