Nearly three quarters of meal mixes exceed healthy salt levels | Economy

Knorr and Maggi in particular use too much salt, according to research by the Consumers’ Association. The organization examined the complete range of meal mixes from the nine largest providers.

At Knorr, 90 percent of the mixes appear to contain too much salt. The bami mix is ​​an outlier with 4.5 grams of salt per portion. Maggi meal mixes even contain too much salt in 95 percent of the cases. Their sauerkraut mix contains the most salt: 4.6 grams per serving.

The bami goreng spice mix from Conimex is the saltiest mix in the study, with 5 grams of salt per portion.

Herb mixes from Jumbo and Honig fare slightly better. Jumbo mixes contain an average of 1.9 grams of salt per portion and Honig mixes contain 1.8 grams. Yet these manufacturers also sell mixes that contain too much salt.

The Consumers’ Association asked almost five thousand consumers what they think about salt in meal mixes.

More than 80 percent of consumers believe that a meal mix should not contain more than 2 grams of salt per portion. Consumers also do not find it convenient that they have to add less mix themselves to make the meal less salty. Most consumers see a meal mix without salt, or with a separate bag of salt, as the ideal solution.

Consumers who opt for convenience also have the right to a healthy choice, the Consumers’ Association believes. Salt causes the body to retain fluid and therefore increases blood pressure. This increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
