In the past 10 years, 158 km² of nature and forest areas have been lost in the Netherlands. Instead, the amount of built-up area increased. Salland and the rest of Overijssel do not participate in this trend: here the space for nature actually increased.

In Overijssel, 5km² of forest and nature were added, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. There was also more space for water, about 7 km² was added. As in the rest of the Netherlands, built-up areas in particular showed a large increase. In our province, approximately 27 km² of construction was added. All this was at the expense of agricultural areas. As much as 40 km² of agricultural land disappeared in the region. Despite this, Overijssel still has the largest agricultural area in proportion, 58.5% of the province consists of agricultural and horticultural land.

The rest of the Netherlands
People find the most nature in Gelderland, 26.3% of the land area consists of forest and nature. For truly urban areas one has to go to South Holland (34.4%), in this province the most nature reserves were also lost. Over the past 10 years, 60 km² of forest and nature have disappeared here. Most of the water is found in Friesland, mainly thanks to the Wadden Sea. Across the Netherlands, 15 km² of nature disappeared. The agricultural area also decreased sharply, namely by 178 km². This space was mainly taken up by buildings, which increased by 277 km².
