Amsterdam ranks 2nd worldwide when it comes to the most popular cities to work as an expat, according to a major study by Boston Consulting Group. In total, more than 150,000 respondents from 188 countries around the world participated in the survey. Of those participants, eight percent indicated that they wanted to move to our city. Only London is more popular.

From 2020 to 2023, Amsterdam will be one of the most attractive cities to work and was also ranked second in the world as a metropolitan destination last year.

London ranks number one in the survey as a destination city for work. The leader has been the most attractive city since 2014, due to, among other things, its great economic and financial opportunities, English as the main language, access to Europe and America and an ‘exceptional global network’.

Amsterdam therefore remains at number two, followed by Dubai, Abu Dhabi and New York in the top five best cities to work. Berlin is in sixth place, followed by Singapore, Barcelona, Tokyo and Sydney in the top ten.

Popularity

The consultancy firm’s research also shows that other factors, in addition to the quality of work, also play a role in the popularity of a city. Quality of life and climate, safety, stability, culture and a family-friendly environment play a major role. Visa policy and health care are also cited as major factors.

It is striking that the Netherlands is not popular as a country and attracts fewer expats. The most important countries to live in as an expat are Australia, the US, Canada and the United Kingdom.
