British Energy Minister Andrew Bowie announced this in an interview with American media in Turin, Italy. That’s where the G7 – the industrial superpowers the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy and France – are currently meeting. Bowie called the agreement ‘historic’.

The meeting of the G7 is the first major political session since the world promised during the COP28 climate conference in December to eventually move away from coal, oil and gas.

The measure has already been introduced in the Netherlands. Burning coal for electricity will be banned here in 2030.

According to CNN, it is particularly special that Japan has changed tack. That country would still obtain 32 percent of its energy from coal in 2023, according to the climate think tank Ember. In total, the G7 countries currently obtain about 16 percent of their energy from coal.

The G7 is also expected to commit to reducing plastic production to tackle global pollution. “The G7 recognizes for the first time that the level of plastic pollution is unsustainable and that its increase is alarming,” the French Ministry of Ecological Transition said.
