The European elections are only a month away, but political party 50PLUS is still unable to access their bank account. The paper financial administration has now been returned to the party.

At a tumultuous members meeting, treasurer Harry van den Dool and the head of the financial committee Johan Hessing were dismissed at the end of March. Hessing then took the party’s entire financial administration with him to his home in Zeeland. Only weeks later did he return it to the party office in The Hague.

Now that the party has access to the paper administration again, the former treasurer refuses to cooperate. That is why transferring the account takes longer. The new chairman Willem Dekker expects this to be resolved early next week.

The European elections will be held next month and 50PLUS wants to run for a seat. It is useful to have access to the bank account for commercials and other promotional material, but according to Dekker it is not essential.

“Anyway, we’re just going to do it. It’s not about a world sum. In the end it will work out, but we don’t know where we stand. How much money do we have left?” Dekker wonders.

Outstanding bills

Due to the transition of management and problems with the administration, the party also did not pay some bills. The largest is an invoice of almost 13,000 euros to an advertising agency for a campaign for the recent House of Representatives elections. Dekker says he plans to pay it as soon as the account is accessible.

The advertising agency has asked the debt collection agency involved to wait before going to court. This week there will be another meeting between the party and the advertising agency, says director Joost Konings of collection agency Invoeringsbedrijf Amsterdam.

50PLUS says it can count on many candidates for the European elections. The party wants to gain one seat in the European Parliament. “We succeeded last time, so we don’t have to do any difficult feats,” says Dekker. The party is currently no longer represented in Brussels, because European Parliament Member Toine Manders decided to switch to the CDA in 2020.
