Venice has already earned 975,000 euros from selling entrance tickets. Since the end of April, visitors to the Italian city have had to pay an entrance fee of 5 euros on the busiest days. The city council hopes to limit mass tourism with the measure.
With approximately fifteen million visitors per year, Venice is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. The city earns a lot from tourism, but the enormous crowds also lead to major problems.
Venice has designated 29 days as busy days this year, when tourists have to pay to enter the city. The first test week ran from April 25 to May 5. A total of 195,000 tickets were sold during that period.
The entrance fee will be charged on almost all Saturdays and Sundays until mid-July, when the city will reassess the measure. As a general rule, all day visitors must pay between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Anyone who does not do so may receive a fine of up to 300 euros.
The entrance tickets are only mandatory for day tourists. An entrance ticket is therefore not necessary if you also spend the night in the city. In addition, an exception applies for children under the age of fourteen and people with disabilities.
