The AEX index on the Amsterdam stock exchange rose above 900 points for the first time on Tuesday. This was partly due to a significant price gain by payment processor Adyen.

On Tuesday, the prices of almost all 25 companies rose. In addition to Adyen, outliers included DSM-Firmenich, AkzoNobel and NN Group (the former Nationale-Nederlanden).

The index has been on an upward trend since the autumn. Then the 25 main funds of the AEX together amounted to around 720 points. Since then, investors seem confident. The 800 points mark was already reached in January and three months later another 100 points were added.

The recent price rise is partly because many investors expect central banks to lower their interest rates this year. As a result, the interest rates at regular banks, for example the savings interest rate, often also decrease. The interest rate on bonds is also falling.

If savings and bonds yield less, people are more likely to invest in shares. Stock exchange traders are already incorporating these expectations into their prices.

AEX once started at 45 points

When it was founded in 1983, the AEX stood at 100 points. That was still in guilders at the time. Converted into euros, the starting score was 45.38 points.

During the height of the internet boom at the beginning of this century, the AEX broke the 700 point barrier for the first time. After the internet bubble burst a short time later, the price fell sharply. In March 2003, the indicator even reached its lowest point: 218.44 points.

In the years that followed, the index recovered to a peak of 560 points in 2008, just before the outbreak of the financial crisis. The low point of the credit crisis was reached on March 9, 2009 with a score of 194.99 points.

After that, the AEX continued to rise. For example, on February 17, 2020, just before the corona pandemic, it recorded more than 630 points. It was only in March 2021 that the index managed to erase the old record from the beginning of this century.
