British drug manufacturer AstraZeneca is withdrawing its Covid-19 vaccine globally, reports The Telegraph newspaper. It has not been administered in the Netherlands since 2021.

The pharmaceutical company’s Covid-19 vaccine is no longer necessary because many other vaccines are available.

The pharmaceutical company’s Covid-19 vaccine is no longer necessary because many other vaccines are available. It can no longer be used in the European Union now that it has been withdrawn.

In 2021, the pharmaceutical company admitted that the vaccine ‘can cause TTS in very rare cases’. TTS stands for thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome and can lead to blood clots and a low platelet count.

The vaccine, known as Vaxzevria, can no longer be used in the European Union now that AstraZeneca has withdrawn it, the newspaper said.

In the United Kingdom, a class action lawsuit is underway against AstraZeneca because use of its vaccine has caused serious injury and sometimes even death in dozens of cases.

The Netherlands stopped administering the vaccine against the coronavirus in November 2021. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines showed greater effectiveness against infection, the Health Council reported at the time.

An earlier version of this article suggested that AstraZeneca withdrew the vaccine from the market because it can rarely cause TTS. This was based on incorrect information provided by the ANP news agency. The withdrawal of the vaccine is due to an oversupply of other vaccines, the pharmaceutical company reports.
