British drug manufacturer AstraZeneca is withdrawing its COVID-19 vaccine worldwide, reports TheTelegraph. The vaccine has not been administered in the Netherlands since 2021.

The move follows reports that the pharmaceutical company’s vaccine can cause TTS in very rare cases. TTS stands for thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome and can lead to blood clots and a shortage of platelets.

A class action lawsuit against AstraZeneca is underway in the United Kingdom, alleging that the vaccine has caused serious injury and sometimes even death in dozens of cases. The rare side effect has been included in the vaccine leaflet since April 2021. According to the Medicines Evaluation Board, the chance of this is “very small”.

The vaccine, known as Vaxzevria, can no longer be used in the European Union now that AstraZeneca has withdrawn it. The reason is not TTS, but a lack of demand, the company reports to NU.nl.

The AstraZeneca vaccine has no longer been used in the Netherlands since November 1, 2021. People who had first received a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine were advised to get a second shot from Pfizer.

AstraZeneca said in a statement that it is proud of the role Vaxzevria has played in the pandemic. “According to independent estimates, more than 6.5 million lives were saved in the first year of use alone and more than three billion doses were delivered worldwide,” the company wrote.
