After Albert Heijn, Jumbo will also sell milk products in an old-fashioned folding packaging instead of with a cap. According to a spokesperson for the supermarket chain, the time is now ripe for this.
Albert Heijn has already taken this step. Both supermarkets are concerned with organic varieties of milk and related products. “The organic customer is more open to this,” says a spokesperson.
Dairy producer FrieslandCampina tried it in 2021, a spokesperson said when asked. “Then we removed the cap on the organic products. But the consumer was clearly not ready for that. It caused resistance. People found it unpleasant, not hygienic and not practical. People want to be able to shake the pack and lay it flat. in the fridge.”
FrieslandCampina also believed that the ‘organic customer’ would embrace this. “But the consumer left the suits.” About a year later the cap was returned to the pack. However, the amount of plastic in the packaging itself was permanently reduced.
Sustainability now trumps convenience
“In the past, all dairy products came in folding packaging,” says Jumbo. “The market then chose to put a cap on the packs for the sake of convenience.” And that is exactly why the bulk of the packs of dairy products still have a cap.
Because sustainability is becoming increasingly self-evident, Jumbo is now also daring to take the step, even though the two largest supermarket chains in the country only deal with organic products.
“Depending on how this is received, we will see if we can roll it out further,” says the Jumbo spokesperson. “We are continuously looking at whether we can make the packaging more sustainable,” Albert Heijn reports.
