As an actress, Rian Gerritsen (52) already has many roles on her resume, but that does not mean that she is now swimming in money. Her partner is a stay-at-home dad and that means that Rian provides bread on the table. It can be quite tough sometimes, she says in the ‘De Telegraaf’ supplement ‘Woman’.
“Acting won’t make you rich anyway, but as a single earner it is more difficult”
Rian is known for, among other things The Lice Mother, Who is the mole?, Cell block H and Doctor Deen. She is currently starring in the theater production In the elevator, which is about a working mother trying to keep all the balls up at the same time. That role appears to be tailor-made for her. “A working mother who is trying to make a career while also solving her child’s problems: I can relate to that,” she admits.
Rian is the breadwinner herself, while her partner takes on a large part of the care for their teenage daughter. “Although in practice I still do most of it,” she admits. “He does his best to contribute as much as possible. It may not be completely equal, but I never asked him for that.” The actress is happy with the way they solved it: because he is at home, she can combine motherhood and her career.
Although it is sometimes difficult for her to be single-handedly responsible for their income. “Acting won’t make you rich anyway, but as a single earner it is more difficult. I regularly think: am I not going to make ends meet this month again?” She can’t afford to say ‘no’ to roles, even if they don’t suit her. “I’m secretly longing to have a permanent role again for a longer period of time. To fully develop a character, to unleash your imagination… Unfortunately, I usually have small, one-off roles.”
