Welcoming a house, tree, animal and especially a child is not self-evident. Marlou and Ferdos know all about this, as they candidly share in ‘Buying without Looking’. The tears flow as they tell their story to Martijn Krabbé (56), Alex van Keulen (55) and Bob Sikkes (58).
“Our lives have actually been at a standstill for 3.5 years”
With the story of Marlou and Ferdos it is an emotional season finale Buy without Looking. The couple has been together for more than twelve years, of which they have been married for a year and a half, and are very much ready for a ‘grown-up home’. They have a great desire to have children, which, to their sadness, has not yet been fulfilled. “Our lives have actually been at a standstill for 3.5 years.”
“We are now 3.5 years later and the room that should have become the nursery is still empty. Because it is not always that easy and unfortunately it is not with us either,” says Marlou in tears about the fertility project they are going through. . “The desire is very great, the love is there and we are also convinced that we can offer a loving home,” adds an equally emotional Ferdos. “But it is not self-evident.”
The couple informs Martijn about the failed transfer in the ICSI process earlier that week. “There is another one in the freezer, so they will first try to put it back and if that doesn’t work, you basically have to start over again. So then you have to take the pill again and take another injection.” The story of Marlou and Ferdos also leaves Alex van Keulen untouched. Martijn notes that the two have a lot of support for each other. “We also sometimes say: ‘I wouldn’t want to do this or be able to do this with anyone else’ and I think it has really brought us closer together,” Marlou agrees.
The story also affects real estate agent Alex van Keulen in particular. When he hears the couple talking about their unfulfilled desire to have children, he gets angry for a moment. “That’s something you don’t think about if you want to have children,” he later says to the camera about that moment. “Everyone just assumes that it will happen automatically and will succeed. It is such a deep-rooted wish for these two young people. I sincerely hope that it will work out for them, but it did touch me, yes.”
The couple remains hopeful and they look forward to their Buy without Looking-adventure. “We will be happy together anyway, with or without children.”
Marlou and Ferdos dream of a large home in Groningen, but Alex and Bob soon decide that they cannot find a house there that meets their budget of 470,000 euros and their wishes. And so they end up in a large house in Haren, the second choice in terms of place of residence.
The couple is initially very disappointed about this, but after the complete renovation, demolished walls and… magic touch van Roos – who had to hold back a lot in terms of color this time because of the desired mood board of Marlou and Ferdos: beige, beige, beige – they are ecstatic about the end result.
