At the start of the conversation, Willeke says that she finds it difficult to look back on the loss of her daughter. There are several reasons for this, she explains. “Losing a child is the greatest loss you can experience. It has affected me deeply and I still find it difficult to talk about it, to put it into words. It would be a disservice to her to talk about it. That feels too much.” private and intimate.” For that reason, she prefers to keep it to herself.
There is another reason why she prefers not to talk about the difficult times she has had. A ‘physical reason’, she says. “Strong emotions cause me to have voice problems. All those feelings literally close my throat, which I have experienced in recent months due to the death of my daughter and also due to the sudden loss of my younger brother Tonny.” That’s why she doesn’t want to ‘put herself in that situation again’.
It is not the first time that Willeke’s voice has failed her. She previously experienced this during difficult periods. “Then I just can’t do it anymore. It takes a lot of effort to get out of there.”
As if it wasn’t hard enough for the singer, she also had an unfortunate fall just before the interview. “I had taken my sweet dog Mickey out for a walk and wanted to let her back in. So I reached down to loosen her collar and, boom, fell flat on my nose.” At the hospital they wrapped her nose completely in bandages. “But you won’t hear me complain, I was treated well.”
Fortunately, Willeke is slowly but surely climbing out of her valley again. “My life is not a drama, I am very happy with the path I have been able to walk so far. My voice problems are over and I can again do what I love most: performing .” Although she will only give intimate concerts for people in healthcare and will therefore skip large shows, Willeke is enjoying it to the fullest.
